IPL Latest News 2025
The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 is about to begin, but there’s big news this season.
The Union Health Ministry has asked the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to ban all tobacco and alcohol ads, including surrogate promotions, inside stadiums and during live broadcasts.
Government’s New Rule for IPL 2025
The Director General of Health Services (DGHS), Atul Goel, sent a letter to IPL chairman Arun Singh Dhumal, asking for a strict ban on tobacco and alcohol promotions. The ministry also wants to stop the sale of these products at IPL venues.
The government is also pushing for a rule that prevents cricketers, commentators, and other IPL figures from promoting these products in any way. The main aim is to protect young viewers from unhealthy influences.
Why Is This Ban Happening?
Cricket is one of the most-watched sports in India, and the IPL has a massive audience. Over the years, alcohol and tobacco brands have used indirect marketing tricks (like branding music CDs, packaged water, or apparel) to stay visible. The government believes that such ads encourage unhealthy habits, especially among young fans.
This isn’t the first time the health ministry has taken action. In August 2024, they sent a similar warning to BCCI, asking them to stop such ads. With IPL 2025 coming up, they are now taking a stricter stance.
How This Will Affect IPL 2025 Sponsorships
A ban on alcohol and tobacco sponsorships means that IPL teams and broadcasters will need to find new sponsors. For years, these brands have invested heavily in cricket. Now, companies from industries like fintech, education, healthcare, and technology might step in as new sponsors.
Some experts think brands will still find ways to advertise indirectly, making it tough to completely eliminate surrogate ads.
What Do Fans Think About This?
Fans have mixed reactions. Some support the move, saying it’s a step toward ethical advertising. Others worry that teams might lose money due to a lack of big sponsors.
Experts also believe that brands will find creative loopholes to keep their ads running, even with the ban in place.
Final Thoughts
With IPL 2025 starting on March 22, it will be interesting to see how the BCCI and IPL teams handle this new rule. Will they fully follow the ban, or will brands find new ways to advertise? We’ll find out soon!
